KURIA HISTORY/MIGRATION

Though I know less about the Kuria tribe, I am still very proud to share the little knowledge of my own tribe. I was born and raised in a city far away from my own origin, but that did not discourage or stop me from being and going to my roots.
The Kuria are indigenous African ethnic group of semi-nomadic located in Kenya and northern Tanzania. So now you have the Kuria from Tanzania and Kenya. The Tanzanian's Kuria's are found in the northern part of the country from Lake Victoria all the way to the border of Kenya (Sirari), and some had immigrated to the Serengeti areas. They are also divided into different Groups called "Kibhara", such as Nyabasi, Bakira, Bairege, Bagumbe (who reside in both Kenyan and Tanzanian districts), Batimbaru, Banyamongo, Bakenye, Baikoma, Bamerani, Banchari,Bairege,Batimbaru, as well as several others, this groups distinguish what part of the northern they reside, also it breaks down to what they call "Ikhisaku" or "Entrance" such Bahirimbaki, bahirigaini, and the list goes, which also breaks down to what family or ancestors you belong. Let me break myself down, my group is "Munchari" and that's will tell you i am from Northern part called Bhunchari, my Entrance or "Ikhisaku" is "Muhirimbaki" and my ancestors are "Makore son of Kiraryo".

As you can see on the map i have marked the kuria's territories with red. From the map also you can tell the tribe is verry small which strongly established itself on the border of Tanzanania and kenya. They both share the border and river Mara. One will think the river Mara and close to the Lake victoria will make this guys very busy fishing, the answer is NO!! the kurya spend most of their time grazing and farming.

  6. Speaking of Amakora abhaNgoreme, (the group that I belong) we have have 4 makoras Abhanyambureti, Abhaghamunyari, Abhamaina, Forgot the fourth. these makoras repeats after the older generation is "gone". So it goes like this... Watoto wa Abhanyambureti is Abhaghamunyari, na watoto wa abhaghamunyari ni Abhamaina, na watoto wa Abhamaina "I forgot" na watoto wa "I forgot" is Abhanyambureti. The circle starts over again.

  14. Why do some kurian "clans" such as wangoreme normally do not like to identify themselves as wakurya? Anyway, you people if you real want to write a history of wakurya you need to undertake a serious research. To my understanding, very little scientific research has been conducted on this matter. So i wish you all the best, but if you are real serious.

  17. Thanks again Sam!
Sometime back I emailed you this web site.
    http://www.bluegecko.org/kenya/tribes/kuria/history.htm
It makes interesting reading. Have a look at it.
And then I was wondering how we go about "Chombarizing" or is it "Swahilizing" Kurya names [of people and places]!

Is there a Kurya name "MatiKU"? Or isn't it more realistic if it were written "MatiKO"? Or for that matter "Mukami" which ought to be "MOkami". Have you ever heard of a place called "Pemba" in Bhunchari which really is "Bhembha". In fact the Kurya language vehemently avoids the letter "L" by emphasizing the "R" to the point of even suggesting a "string of "RS" which would help you pronounce the vegetable "INKURRRA" properly.

Well I am sure this blog will get more exciting

Whoever wants to write history/origin of the Kurya people will be better off by starting with studying the oral traditions and TERMS in our tribe which could hint at our origin. Let me give examples.

In my childhood i have always observed our parents getting agigated about somebody having passed family "secrets" outside to some "OMOHAMATE". For some reason I strongly believe this term refered to HAMITES, meaning that Kuria were not of Hamitic stock. Bantus are mostly not Hamitic.

Kurias are kins to Kisii people. The later have an oral tradition that they migrated from somewhere in the middle East, went through a place called MISIRI, and were separated by many other groups around Mt. Ruwenzori where some groups took left and went right.

Hebrews in year 60-70 AD were massaccared by the Romans. About a milion died, many were taken to slavery but the bulk escaped into Africa through Egypt right into other parts of Africa. This movement could support those given by the Kissii people.

These traditions also shed light to the fact that Kurias are Bantus, and bantus are believed to have descended from the original hebrews which explain why Kurias like other bantus conduct circumcision (sometimes even female), separate themselves from mensturating women, inherit women once their husbands have passed away conduct their ceremonies based on lunar calendar. Kuria laws of inheritance are similar to the laws given to Moses. Whoever decides to write this history please cover this weath of culture in our tribe

    1. it seems like the Kurias, Kisiis and Mt Kenya Bantus were once one group. it would seem that this group had settled around Mt Elgon but were forced to disperse by the Nilotic migration. i believe this group came from Egypt by following the Nile downwards as ancient Egyptian Bantus must have known the route. even though these Bantus had a penchant for settling around hills and mountains, it would seem that their ancestors preferred river valleys. from their initial candle in Cameroon, ancient Bantus migrated towards different river valleys, some went to the different river valleys in the Congo basin while others opted for the Niger basin. yet another group went for the Nile valley. later on after confrontations with Nilotes and Cushites, the Bantus who had now developed tools that could till hard soil rather than the soft sediments on river valleys now opted for mountains and hilltops. the priority was now hilltops and mountains with good precipitation to support agriculture and ensure security.
